Scattered waves from low-frequency earthquakes and plate boundary structure in northern Cascadia

چکیده
[1] We use 3-D waveform modeling of LFEs (lowfrequency earthquakes) to investigate their relation to plate boundary structure along a linear transect in northern Cascadia. To account for crustal velocity heterogeneity, a smoothed 3-D model of subduction zone structure is assembled that incorporates constraints from regional tomographic and plate boundary models. Scattered phases within LFE waveforms are identified based on synthetic predictions that incorporate thrust mechanisms aligned parallel to a dipping plate boundary atop a high-Vp/Vs lowvelocity zone (LVZ). Scattering for near-vertical paths is dominated by S-to-P/S-to-S reflections/conversions from the LVZ. The modeling suggests that LFEs lie at or very close to the plate boundary and that the LVZ structure is laterally heterogeneous but broadly consistent with results from teleseismic analysis. Cascadia tremor spectra: Low corner frequencies and earthquake‐like high‐frequency falloff
[1] The discovery of non‐volcanic tremor (NVT) has opened a new window to observe major Earth plate boundaries. However, the spectral characteristics of NVT have not been well studied due to poor signal‐ to‐noise ratio (SNR) on individual seismograms. We estimate the spectral content of Cascadia tremor between 2.5 and 20 Hz by suppressing noise using array analysis, and compute empirical path c...

We analyze the influence of Earth and ocean tides on the triggering of low-frequency earthquakes (LFEs) in northern Cascadia using three LFE catalogs for southern Vancouver Island and Washington state from episodic tremor and slip events between 2003 and 2013. Sensitivities of LFE families to tidally induced fault normal stress, updip shear stress (UDSS), and corresponding time derivatives are ...
متن کاملSubduction zone guided waves and the heterogeneity structure of the subducted plate: Intensity anomalies in northern Japan
[1] The subducting Pacific plate acts an efficient waveguide for high-frequency signals and often produces anomalously large intensity on the eastern seaboard of northern Japan during deep earthquakes. The waveform records in the region of high intensity show a low-frequency (f < 0.25 Hz) onset for both P and S waves, followed by large, highfrequency (f > 2 Hz) later arrivals with a long coda. ...
متن کاملPeriodic slow earthquakes from the Cascadia subduction zone.
Continuous geodetic measurements from convergent margins have shown that deep transient creep events can release large amounts of strain energy without detectable seismic shaking, and they are thus known as slow or silent earthquakes. Because subduction zones generate the largest earthquakes, seismic hazard assessment relies on understanding the degree to which slow earthquakes reduce the energ...
متن کاملTomographic image of low P velocity anomalies above slab in northern Cascadia subduction zone
At the Cascadia margin the Juan de Fuca plate is subducting beneath the North America plate, causing active seismicity within both plates. Earthquakes occur down to a maximum depth of 80 km within the descending oceanic plate and to about 30 km in the overriding continental plate. We use a method of seismic tomography to invert 28,230 P wave arrival times from 2666 local earthquakes that occurr...
